Gardiner Street Student Accomodation, Dublin 1

Áit U + L were appointed by to provide landscape consultant services for the development of a Student Residence Apartment Block on Gardiner Street in Dublin’s North Inner City.

The Architects design provided for a large central courtyard which the apartment blocks enclosed and this was to be the main focus of Áit’s landscape proposals. The Courtyard is generously dimensioned and ensures that even during the short days of winter parts of the courtyard will benefit from direct sunlight.

The courtyard functions as the primary circulation space from the street to and from apartment stair / lift areas and is also conceived as a space for staying and gathering. An in-situ bench is positioned to exploit the better sunlit part of the courtyard nestled into a deep planting bed.

Moveable outdoor seating will also be provided to allow residents to benefit from other suntraps in the space and also to sit in groups. The main body of the courtyard is left open and flexible to allow for a multiplicity of uses and events.
