PROJECT SUMMARY

2024 National Age Friendly Recognition and Achievement Awards, Winner; Housing Category

An age-friendly housing development completed on behalf of South Dublin County Council. Áit designed a central courtyard space which residents can access from their individual units; the intention is that residents come and go through this central space and so opportunities for social engagement
are enhanced. The courtyard is also surrounded by paved patios.

The central courtyard is predominantly paved in porous resin-bound gravel in addition to permeable precast concrete paviours, paving cross-falls are typically laid towards the central planters which are defined by a flush kerb, excess surface water which does not percolate into the resin-bound paving will be received in these planters.

The planting palette for the project includes an array of nectar producing perennials and bulbs for pollinating insects, native tree species such as Bird Cherry, Crab Apple and Rowan provide an early source of nectar and pollen. Understorey planting provides colour, vibrancy and tactile qualities, Foxglove, Echinacea and Rudbeckia alongside ornamental grasses for structure and Lambs-ear and Sedum telephium for texture.
